Shopify vs WooCommerce in Pakistan: Which One for Your Store?

The honest comparison for Pakistani stores: monthly cost, COD and local payments, couriers, control, and a simple way to pick the right platform.

If you are starting an online store in Pakistan, the platform debate almost always comes down to two names: Shopify or WooCommerce. Both can run a serious store. They are just good at different things, and the right choice depends on how you run your business more than on the platforms themselves.

The one-line difference

Shopify is a hosted service: you pay monthly and they handle the technical side. WooCommerce is a plugin on WordPress that you host yourself: cheaper to run, more control, more responsibility.

Side by side

Shopify WooCommerce
Monthly cost Platform fee (roughly PKR 8,000+/mo) Free plugin, you pay hosting (PKR 5,000 to 15,000/yr)
Setup Fastest, guided More DIY or needs a developer
Control Within Shopify's rules Total control
Maintenance Shopify handles it You handle updates and security
SEO flexibility Good Excellent
Scaling Effortless Depends on your hosting and setup

How they handle Pakistan specifically

Payments. Neither has perfect local integration out of the box. COD works on both. JazzCash and EasyPaisa work on both, usually through third-party gateways or plugins, and card payments typically go through a gateway like PayFast or Stripe if you have access. The plumbing is solvable on either platform; neither is blocked by payments.

COD. Both handle cash on delivery fine. This was never the differentiator.

Couriers. Integrations with Pakistani couriers (TCS, Leopard, PostEx, Trax) exist on both, though they are less plug-and-play than international carriers. Either way you will likely want some setup help wiring order-to-dispatch properly.

The real decision criteria

Choose Shopify when you want the least technical overhead possible, you value time-to-launch and reliability over customization, the monthly fee is acceptable overhead, and you do not need deep changes to how the store works. For most brand owners who just want a store that works, Shopify is the simpler life.

Choose WooCommerce when you want full control and lower ongoing cost, your team (or developer) can handle maintenance, content and SEO are central to your strategy, or you need custom flows that fight Shopify's structure. It is also the better answer at high order volume when the monthly platform fee starts to sting.

Our honest lean for most Pakistani businesses starting out: Shopify if budget allows because it removes the most failure points. WooCommerce if you want control and lower running cost. Both beat a badly-built custom store, and both lose to a well-built one when you outgrow them.

The mistakes to avoid

  • Picking the platform before deciding the COD and payment flow.
  • Letting a bloated theme and a dozen plugins make a WooCommerce site slow.
  • Assuming Shopify's monthly fee is the whole cost; apps add up.
  • Migrating platforms later because you picked wrong the first time. It is painful, so choose deliberately.
