How to Sell Online with Cash on Delivery in Pakistan

Most Pakistani buyers pay cash on delivery. Here is how to build your store around COD: confirmation flows, fake-order defense, courier choices, and the platforms that handle it.

Most Pakistani customers still do not pay online. They order, the rider shows up, they hand over cash. If your online store treats cash on delivery as an afterthought, you are ignoring the way the majority of your market actually buys. Here is how to set up selling online with COD in Pakistan properly.

Why COD is not optional here

Card penetration in Pakistan is a fraction of what it is in Western markets. JazzCash and EasyPaisa have grown, but for a huge share of buyers the trust equation is simple: pay when the parcel arrives. Stores that only take prepaid payment lose those customers entirely. COD is not a compromise, it is the default checkout option you build everything else around.

The real costs of COD

COD is not free to run. Understand its friction before you build around it.

  • Returns and refusals. The biggest one. Parcels refused at the door cost you shipping both ways plus restocking. Rates vary wildly by niche; anything over 20 percent return needs attention.
  • Fake orders. Competitors and bored people place orders they never intend to accept. Without confirmation you ship into a loss.
  • Courier dependence. Your customer experience is partly your courier's. Late riders, lost parcels, slow remittance of collected cash all land on your brand.

How good stores handle it

Confirm before shipping. An automated WhatsApp or SMS confirmation message, or a quick call for larger orders, filters most fake orders cheaply. Confirming takes minutes; a refused parcel costs thousands.

Take partial advance where you can. Even PKR 500 advance via JazzCash or bank transfer kills fake orders almost completely. Offer a small incentive like free shipping for prepaid to train customers toward it.

Offer every payment option side by side. COD plus JazzCash plus EasyPaisa plus card. Every option you add is a customer who does not bounce at checkout.

Choose couriers deliberately. TCS, Leopard, PostEx, Trax each have different coverage, speed, and remittance terms. Compare remittance speed specifically, because slow cash remittance strangles your cash flow at volume.

The platform question

You can run COD on Shopify, WooCommerce, or a custom build. Shopify is the fastest path with the cleanest admin; WooCommerce costs less monthly and gives full control; custom makes sense when you outgrow both or need flows they cannot express, like marketplace-style order splitting or deeply custom checkout.

Whatever you pick, the COD flow itself matters more than the platform: order placed, WhatsApp confirmation fired automatically, order packed and shipped, tracking sent to the customer, cash collected and remitted. Automate the confirmation and tracking messages, because doing it manually stops scaling at a few orders a day.

The checklist

  1. COD enabled plus at least two prepaid options.
  2. Automatic WhatsApp order confirmation.
  3. Courier integration with tracking sent to customers.
  4. A partial-advance incentive for high-value orders.
  5. Return-rate tracking so you spot a problem niche early.
